Mid-Autumn travel surge sees kilometres-long queue on Tolo Highway

A queue several kilometres long formed on Tolo Highway towards Tai Po during the evening rush on Mid-Autumn Day, as heavy traffic spread across Hong Kong’s major roads and cross-harbour routes on 25 September 2026.

The pressure was also evident on the MTR. Kowloon Tong Station was crowded, while passengers filled the passage between Hong Kong Station and Central. Other stations were also reported to be packed as people travelled to reunite with their families.

The Transport Department said MTR Corporation had reported large crowds at the border control point. Some East Rail services were adjusted, and passengers were told to check their trains’ destinations.

It also reported congestion on roads across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, including the Central-Wan Chai Bypass, Waterloo Road and Lung Cheung Road.

Extra staff were deployed at East Rail stations to assist passengers. The Transport Department urged people to plan their journeys early and allow sufficient travel time, and asked drivers to be patient and drive carefully on affected roads.
