More than 700 legal practitioners from Hong Kong and Macao have obtained the qualification to practise in nine mainland cities, Secretary for Justice Paul Lam said. Speaking at a forum on 6 November, he urged more practitioners to seek it.
The scheme followed a six-year pilot. The national legislature’s standing committee passed an amendment to the Lawyers Law in August, and the scheme was regularised in September.
Lam said the regularised system needed time to operate before its results could be assessed. He identified helping qualified Hong Kong and Macao practitioners establish sustained legal practices on the mainland as the immediate priority.
