A new track section linking Tung Chung East station in the Hong Kong-bound direction entered service on September 13, marking the latest operating step in the Tung Chung Line Extension project. Trains departing Tung Chung station began using the section from the first train.
For passengers, the immediate change is the route taken by trains rather than the timetable. MTR said train frequency remained unchanged and overall journey times were broadly similar to those before the track change.
MTR described the service as generally smooth and said it would continue monitoring operations on the newly commissioned section.
The extension work is continuing elsewhere on the alignment. MTR’s engineering team will begin the next phase of track-diversion work in the Tung Chung-bound direction, including removing part of the old Hong Kong-bound track that is no longer needed for operations. That will create room for the diversion and for new track to be laid.
Further turnout-installation work is also planned as part of the project. MTR plans the third turnout installation at the end of 2026 and the fourth in 2027, so the new section entering service does not mark the completion of the wider extension works.
