Hong Kong’s MTR will run later for Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations on September 25, but passengers should not expect an overnight service. Eight local railway lines and the Light Rail will extend their operating hours by about 1.5 hours, with final trains leaving after 1am or 2am the following day, depending on the route.
Services on the Island, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, South Island and Tuen Ma lines will be strengthened from 3pm, followed by the Tseung Kwan O and Tung Chung lines from 4pm. The busiest services will run as frequently as every two minutes. MTR bus routes 506, K51 and K54A will also operate for longer.
Police will close roads around Tai Hang in phases from 2pm until midnight for the fire dragon dance, while several roads in Causeway Bay will become pedestrian zones. Further closures may be introduced as crowd and traffic conditions change.
Other restrictions will affect areas around Aberdeen and Pok Fu Lam, the Peak, the Gold Coast in Tuen Mun, and Tai Mo Shan and Shing Mun Reservoir in Tsuen Wan. The Transport Department says 44 bus routes and 14 green minibus routes will be diverted, with some stops temporarily relocated.
Tram travel will be free for unlimited journeys on September 25, with services strengthened according to demand. The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd will adjust or strengthen several routes, while Citybus will bring forward afternoon peak departures on more than 30 routes. Citybus will also run special route 173R from Stanley at 10pm and 11pm.
For the following weekend, East Rail services will be strengthened during parts of September 26 and 27, while high-speed rail services will include additional short-haul trains and strengthened sleeper services through September 27. Travellers should check the Transport Department website, the HKeMobility app or broadcast updates before setting out, particularly for journeys through festival areas.
