The opening date for the redeveloped New Huanggang Port had not been finalized as of September 5, 2026, as Hong Kong and Shenzhen authorities continued adjusting and coordinating their systems. The work focuses on improving the speed of the “collaborative inspection and joint clearance” process. Officials estimated that the full clearance process could take about 20 seconds once the system is operating as intended. Initial capacity estimates differed in emphasis: reports said the port could handle at least 100,000 travellers a day at first, while its stated initial daily capacity was about 200,000.
The self-service system is intended to send identity-document, facial-image and fingerprint data from the departure side to the entry side for verification. First-time users will need to consent to data sharing, and may choose facial-recognition clearance. Registration is also expected to be available through a future mobile application and at on-site kiosks.
More than 100 retired officers had reportedly been hired on contract to support staffing, although officials said additional manpower would be needed over time. Reports also differed on the number of large-scale drills completed.
