The High Island Geo Trail – Po Pin Chau Section recorded more than twice as many daily reservations as actual visitors during the trial period covering its first Mid-Autumn Festival weekend. From 25 to 27 September, an average of 2,360 people reserved places each day, including slots released for immediate booking, while attendance averaged about 1,170 a day, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said.
The reservation system is operating with a stated daily quota of 2,000 places. Visitor numbers peaked between 10am and 2pm, but the department said most visitors completed entry verification without waiting and that neither the trail nor the viewing platform became congested.
Extra staff handled entry checks, while officers patrolled the trail and managed visitors at the viewing platform. Drones monitored both areas at intervals, and broadcasts reminded visitors to follow safety rules, including not crossing barriers. Front-line staff also advised older visitors and people without suitable equipment or enough drinking water not to climb the trail, and suggested nearby attractions instead.
Some dates during the National Day Golden Week period are already full. The department will use experience and data from the peak periods to plan for the holiday period and continue reminding travellers to check availability and plan their trips in advance.
