Police have arrested two men over alleged burglaries targeting industrial buildings and isolated warehouses in Yuen Long, Tai Po and Kwai Chung. The two men were arrested in the Wah Sing Street area of Kwai Chung on the night of September 8, police said.
The suspects, both mainland Chinese men holding two-way permits, are alleged to have formed a cross-border burglary group. Police said the group had been active for at least two months and that the investigation was continuing.
According to police, the men usually entered Hong Kong and committed offences on the same night before returning to the mainland. One allegedly looked for targets while the other kept watch, with both entering premises to search them.
Police said the targets were generally unoccupied at night. The men allegedly forced open doors or windows, or climbed exterior walls to enter through unlocked openings.
The reported losses involved cash and gold items worth about HK$280,000 in total. The largest single loss was estimated at about HK$120,000, police said.
Police said officers seized a metal pry tool, scissors, a torch and gloves, along with clothing the men were suspected of wearing during earlier offences. The items were presented as suspected evidence and do not by themselves establish guilt.
Police said CCTV investigations helped identify the suspects. Reports differed over the number of linked incidents: one said the operation had solved six burglaries, while another said at least 10 premises had been burgled. The figures were not reconciled in the reports.
