The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has launched the third phase of its rat-control campaign, focusing on rule-breaking by shopping-centre eateries and extending inspections to other high-risk mall locations and nearby food premises.
The first two phases began on 30 September 2026, targeting supermarkets, eateries, other food premises and public markets. The department said they had resulted in 196 prosecutions, 297 statutory notices to eliminate pests and rodents, and 144 notices requiring food premises to improve cleanliness and make repairs.
The latest checks will examine rubbish collection, food-waste handling and the management of related facilities. The department said responsible parties would be required to improve and speed up waste handling, take pest-control measures, seal rat holes and remove places where rodents can hide.
