An underground saltwater pipe burst near Centre Street Market on Second Street in Sai Ying Pun at about 9am on 25 September, sending water downhill during the morning rush. The jet reportedly rose as high as 3 metres before the flow spread across nearby roads.
Saltwater mixed with mud and sand along Centre Street, causing minor flooding and affecting the approaches to Queen’s Road West and Des Voeux Road West. Several pedestrian crossings were temporarily closed, while vehicles were seen driving through the water.
The Centre Street traffic lane between First Street and Second Street was closed for emergency repairs, and the Transport Department advised drivers to use other roads. Traffic from Second Street was also temporarily barred from turning right into Centre Street.
Police cordoned off affected sections as the Water Supplies Department shut the valve and began repair work. A district care team helped elderly wheelchair users enter and leave the affected area while access remained difficult.
