A 53-year-old security guard who lost the sole of his left foot and the lower part of his right leg after a metal gate collapsed at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal has filed a High Court claim over the accident. The writ names the Secretary for Justice as defendant and alleges that the Architectural Services Department, its employees or agents, were negligent or breached statutory duties.
The claim was filed on September 23, 2026, and seeks compensation for losses arising from the injury, together with costs and interest. The claim has yet to be determined.
The accident happened on September 24, 2023, when a sliding folding metal gate collapsed at the terminal and crushed the guard.
The terminal management company, the security company and a security supervisor were prosecuted after the accident. All three were acquitted after trial. The magistrate’s ruling said the terminal company regularly inspected and maintained the gate and that the security company had provided staff with an emergency system for dealing with a gate derailment.
The ruling said the terminal management company could not have foreseen that security guards would try to restore the gate by hand. It also attributed the accident to several guards’ negligent operation as they attempted to move it.
