North Point MTR station was affected by ceiling leaks and standing water from about 2pm on September 3, after an incident linked to a blocked sewer near Tsat Tsz Mui Road. Several exits and passageways were temporarily closed, disrupting access for passengers, while train services continued normally.
MTR said the leak was caused by sewage backflow from the blocked sewer. An earlier report described the incident only as an external drainage accident and road flooding. Water fell from the concourse ceiling and collected on the floor, with staff using mops, buckets and barriers to manage the area.
The exact closure area varied during the incident, but affected locations included the area around Exit B. One report said exits B1 to B4 were closed while Exit A remained connected to Java Road. Escalators or lifts in affected areas were also suspended, and some passengers queued to use lifts.
An unpleasant smell was reported both outside and inside the station. A bakery worker said the air was particularly bad at about 2pm. MTR said it had cordoned off the affected areas, deployed extra staff to clear the water and assist passengers, and notified the relevant government departments.
The Drainage Services Department sent staff to investigate the incident, including the drainage pipes outside the station. Exit B reopened at about 5.30pm, after having been closed for more than three hours.
MTR said it would continue monitoring the station and inspect and repair the affected ceiling areas after train services ended. A lawmaker also raised questions about whether the station’s water-sealing facilities were adequate, while the incident’s detailed cause, responsibility and the extent of any damage remained subject to further investigation.
