A 62-year-old mainland Chinese ship worker surnamed Li died after falling about 12 metres into a gap in a cargo-ship hold off Ho Yeung Street, Tuen Mun.
Li was handling a container at about 1.18am on 17 September when he fell from the vessel near 97 Ho Yeung Street, roughly 200 metres offshore. He was trapped unconscious in the hold for nearly two hours.
The vessel came alongside as rescuers responded. Firefighters boarded and freed Li, while ambulance personnel performed chest compressions and later used an automated cardiopulmonary resuscitation device. He was taken by ambulance to Tuen Mun Hospital, with resuscitation continuing during the journey.
Li had injuries to his head, back, shoulders and feet, according to reports. Star Headline reported that he was declared dead at 3.37am; Ming Pao reported that he died at about 3am after reaching hospital.
Police classified the case as an industrial accident, Ming Pao reported, and said the cause of death would be determined after an autopsy.
