The University of Hong Kong plans to launch three undergraduate programmes in the 2027/28 academic year: an arts elite programme, a robotics engineering degree and a social sciences elite programme. The last was announced by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the university’s information day on 24 October; the other two had been announced earlier.
The new social sciences course will have academic research and social impact specialisation areas. Students in the social impact area are to receive one-to-one guidance from senior figures in academia, politics and business.
The Faculty of Social Sciences’ associate dean gave a preliminary estimate of 10 to 12 students per academic year. The admission score has not been set and is expected to be much higher than for the regular social sciences bachelor’s programme. The associate dean said the course could lead to master’s study, with training in areas including interpersonal relations, counselling and psychology.
The four-year robotics engineering degree includes experiential study through a Hong Kong–Shanghai programme. The Joint University Programmes Admissions System website listed a HK$50,000 scholarship to support third-year students studying in Shanghai for a year.
The university’s director of admissions and international student exchange urged applicants to consider their interests as well as predicted scores. He said interest in studying at the university had grown and competition was intense.
A current examination candidate said she was weighing early-childhood education and social work after finding her predicted examination results less promising than hoped. A couple accompanying their son said campus information was unclear and made it difficult to find details about their preferred faculty.
At 3pm, HK01 timed the queue from the station concourse to the university’s A2 exit at about 12 minutes.
