Hong Kong Customs officers found a suspected illegally imported live cat in the personal luggage of a 61-year-old mainland traveller at the arrival hall of Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point on 13 September. The traveller was arrested after the discovery.
The cat’s initial estimated market value was about HK$25,000.
Hong Kong Customs said importing an animal into Hong Kong without a valid permit is unlawful. Under the Rabies Regulation, conviction for illegally importing an animal, animal carcass or animal product may carry a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and one year’s imprisonment.
The case was referred to the department responsible for agriculture, fisheries and conservation for follow-up.
