A large Mid-Autumn lantern festival opened at Victoria Park on 17 September, bringing together more than 3,000 lanterns from 20 countries and regions. Organised by the tourism board, the festival is themed around reunion and runs through 27 September.
One installation is an approximately eight-metre Qinhuai banyan-tree lantern, described in the festival programme as a national-level item of intangible cultural heritage.
More than 1,000 of the lanterns were handmade by local craftspeople. The secretary responsible for culture, sports and tourism said the festival brings together historic Qinhuai lanterns, lanterns from around the world and Hong Kong handmade lanterns, presenting cultures from ancient and modern times, both local and international.
The lanterns are switched on at 6.30pm each evening.
