The Water Supplies Department plans to replace approximately 100 metres of water pipe in phases after a burst near Tai Tong Road Light Rail station in Yuen Long. The work will cover the affected section rather than relying only on the emergency repair.
The 300-millimetre fresh-water pipe burst before 8am on September 11 on the eastbound section of Castle Peak Road, near Kui Ting Street, sending muddy water across nearby road lanes and pavement. Ming Pao reported that the flooding had completely receded by about 10am, leaving mud on the road.
The department said it received a report at about 8am and sent staff to the scene. Emergency repairs were completed and water service was restored at 6pm the same day.
It said the damaged pipe was made of asbestos cement and had a relatively high risk of bursting. That was why it planned a more extensive replacement instead of carrying out only a local repair, with the work to be coordinated with the Hong Kong Police Force, Transport Department and Highways Department.
The replacement is expected to take place along the pavement in phases. When the new pipe is connected, shutdowns will be arranged after the evening peak water-use period, according to the department’s work plan reported by Ming Pao.
People using or living near this stretch of Castle Peak Road should therefore expect phased pavement works and possible evening water interruptions. The reports did not give a timetable for the replacement or details of any traffic diversions.
