Fans visiting Anita Mui’s memorial at Hoi Wui Ling Tap on July 18 found the urn missing from its niche, according to a notice signed by her family and reposted by the Anita Mui International Fan Club. The family said the fans alerted them and they reported the matter to police.
Police said they received a report of property suspected to be missing from a temple in Ngong Ping that day. The case was classified as a request for police assistance, and no one had been arrested. HK01 reported that police were still determining whether the case involved theft.
A monk at Po Lin Monastery told HK01 that a fan club had noticed loose screws on the niche months earlier and notified the family, who later came to inspect it. He suggested the screws might have loosened naturally and questioned whether the urn had been stolen.
When HK01 reporters visited on October 11, they found all six screws intact and saw no visible damage.
The family’s notice said the case had made no progress in nearly three months and had caused severe distress, compounded by Mui’s mother having died earlier. It asked anyone who visited Hoi Wui Ling Tap or the Po Lin Monastery area before July 18—especially from early January to mid-July—to share information with police. Drivers who went there in July before July 18 were asked to provide relevant dashcam footage.
