The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said it had caught 77 rats around Baker Circle in Hung Hom over the previous two months. The figure covers the area around the venue, not just the alley shown in a video posted online on October 25.

The footage showed at least 10 rats moving around and feeding in the alley beside a restaurant, with diners separated from them by a window.

The department said it sent a mobile night-time pest-control team late on October 25 to set traps and add bait points. It also increased cleaning in nearby streets and alleys and cleared rubbish bins more frequently.

The department said the alley is within a private estate, whose managers are responsible for day-to-day cleaning and pest control. It issued notices requiring nearby eateries and venue managers to make improvements within a specified period. Separately, it provided pest-control advice to representatives of nearby estates, construction sites and shopping centres.

A separate video posted on October 27 showed a rat inside a railway station. The department said it had strengthened pest control in surrounding public areas, including removing potential sources and sealing rat holes.
