THEi says it has passed all three subject-area assessments required for its planned upgrade to applied-sciences university status. The assessments complete one part of the bid; registration and an institutional review are still to come.

Sports and recreation management and built environment passed their assessments in 2025. Computer science and information technology, the final subject area, passed in May 2026.

The institute’s president said THEi was proceeding with registration under the ordinance governing post-secondary colleges and would then apply for institutional review. Several weeks before the centre opened, it had submitted documents on teachers’ registration qualifications to the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). The president said the process’s timing was outside the school’s control.

The Taikoo Learning Centre opened on October 29. It occupies a full floor in a commercial building and has four classrooms that can be joined together, with capacity for about 200 people.

An immersive room combines virtual- and augmented-reality technology with three large screens around students. THEi’s president said it can simulate settings such as a factory, letting students study production processes.

The centre will take some theory classes, while some sports courses and those requiring laboratories will remain at THEi’s campuses in Chai Wan and Tsing Yi.
