The government has decided not to proceed with the planned Peak light show, according to a joint submission by the Tourism Commission and Hong Kong Tourism Board to the Central and Western District Council on 29 October.
The government said it had considered local views, the likely results of revisions and existing and upcoming tourism activities, and no longer saw an urgent need to continue. The government also assessed that the revised plan might not fully address residents’ environmental concerns, while cutting back the scheme could make it harder to present the original design and achieve its intended effect.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board had considered reducing the 10 planned display sites along the route to seven and shortening the year-long project to the end of February 2027. Another option was to reduce the number of trees carrying lights from 52 to about 24, with some lights removed or relocated.
The installation was planned for Lugard Road and Harlech Road. Lights would have operated from 7pm to 10pm each night, with no music or songs; only low-volume nature sounds were planned at the light-effect locations.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board says it will remove all related installations and restore affected places. It has already removed equipment at the Harlech Road entrance and light sets near the Harlech Road fitness station and on the grass at High West Picnic Area. Grass restoration has been arranged there.
