Hong Kong placed five institutions in the top 10 of the 2027 QS Asia University Rankings, more than any other higher-education system. The University of Hong Kong retained first place for a second year. City University of Hong Kong rose from a tie for seventh to fourth, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong climbed from a tie for seventh to fifth. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology shared ninth place.
QS assessed 1,725 universities across 26 higher-education systems, using 11 indicators adjusted for Asian characteristics. Hong Kong universities averaged 98.5 for the proportion of international students and 96.2 for international faculty, compared with Asian averages of 29.3 and 33.3 respectively. Their average score for citations per paper was 90.0, against an Asian average of 35.2.
QS said internationalisation remains a strength for Hong Kong, but regional competitors are narrowing the gap as competition for international students and academic talent intensifies.
