Hong Kong is scheduled to host the APEC finance ministers’ meeting on October 20 and 21, the first time it will be held in the city. The Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China is hosting the meeting, while the Hong Kong SAR Government is organising it for the first time, HK01 reported.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said ministers and representatives from regional economies would discuss how fiscal policy and financial services could strengthen economic ties across the region.
Chan identified four areas for discussion: fiscal policy that supports people’s livelihoods, financing for digital infrastructure, inclusive finance, and exchanges and cooperation involving young finance professionals.
He said Hong Kong could encourage regional partners to work together on insurance-linked securities, captive insurance companies and a shipping-specific risk pool. Catastrophe bonds and specialist risk cover, he said, could provide financing and protection for infrastructure investment and help address climate risks.
More than 150 young volunteers are expected to help receive visiting ministers and representatives and support the meeting’s operations. Chan said the role would give them a chance to meet business and political leaders and learn about international meetings.
HK01 reported that plans included a welcome dinner, seminars and visits. Chan said visiting officials, business leaders and guests might have opportunities to learn about Hong Kong’s innovation and technology and urban development, and experience its cultural and arts scene.
