Yuen Long police say they have recovered six stolen vehicles and arrested eight men in an investigation into seven vehicle-theft cases.

The cases involved eight private cars and one light goods vehicle. Police said the three groups mainly targeted cars parked at remote roadside locations or in open-air car parks with limited security. Stolen vehicles were used by the groups, resold or sold to vehicle dismantlers. To evade police, the groups would fit stolen vehicles with false number plates, leave them in remote areas or cover them.

Four of the arrested men have been charged and appeared in court. Two others remain in custody, while two have been released on bail pending further investigation.

Separately, Yuen Long police and the District Fight Crime Committee (Yuen Long District) have expanded a vehicle-security scheme launched for motorcycle owners in April to include private cars and light goods vehicles. Approved owners can receive a smart tracking device, HK01 reported.
