The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) issued smart-glasses privacy guidance on 27 October, warning that the devices can take photographs, record video or audio without others readily noticing.

The PCPD says discreet recording can increase the risk of excessive or covert collection of personal data. Photographs, images, audio and other material gathered by the glasses may also be analysed and processed by AI systems, creating additional privacy risks.

The guidance advises users to avoid using smart glasses in changing rooms, hospitals and clinics, and to avoid excessive or continuous recording. Users should tell people before taking photographs.

Where using the glasses involves collecting or using personal data, users should follow relevant requirements under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and use the devices with respect for privacy.
